A Young Lady, at Bath

Having learned the method of expressing words, by means of different coloured ribands, tied together in a particular manner, desired the Author to write some lines applicable to the subject, which request produced the following Extempore .
Before our thoughts by letters were express'd,
Love found a method to unfold the breast;
And, by a quick invention, could supply
To colours meaning, various as their dye:
The silent maid her wishes could impart,
And on a riband open all her heart;
Envy, in vain, the secret would discover,
To all a riddle , but the favour'd lover!
