A Connection
When I ran through the rain
toward the ocean
the sky was grey and felt low and heavy.
The wind spun the droplets
and they landed from every direction.
You smell the sea
well before it appears –
an olfactory announcement
unlike anything else in nature.
At some point the wind changes
and becomes thin, like silk
and a degree cooler too.
In the rain you will find no one
at land’s end
solitary, soaked, and complete.
No different than each wave
rolling in from the opposite direction
to greet you.
