Far and Away

She was bold, daring and arduous,
I didn’t see her while growing up,
She was too busy to be around,
Though she sent her love and gifts,
Mama always assured us that someday we would see her,
She had a portrait of her hung on the wall,
She was dressed like a Duchess.

Mama didn’t stay long enough to see us grow,
She didn’t see us embrace her mama,
Though aged but strong,
She was forcefully retired
because of her incessant forgetfulness,
I was the last to see her,
She was so delighted to see me,
We spoke at length,
She talked about the past and moved to the present,
It was fun with her,
I still treasure those moments.

As I arrived at my destination,
We embraced each other,
She promised to keep in touch,
This she couldn’t,
She soon became a shadow of herself,
My grandma lived in her past,
Her present was wiped off until she finally eased into the night.
