MY GRANNY WAS GONE
I stayed with my granny and slept in her bed
After her last daughter was wed
Always before she blew out the candle at night
“God grant us the light of heaven” she said
She got me up for school each day
But one morning I wondered why
She still slept on so I didn’t move
Until my father arrived with a cry
Her face was white, he felt her brow
She’s gone, he said with a sigh
I was only ten, I didn’t understand then
But tears came into my eyes
Get up quick, go tell your Ma
I found I could hardly speak
But still I believe as my mother said
Her soul is in heaven with God.
