Napping in the Sun

An old brown dog naps on a chair in the sun.
His big brown eyes closed,
His chin, resting on his paw.

The little black dog appears from another room.

And old brown dog's eyes blink open, then slowly close again.
His breathing slows as the rhythm of a slight snoring starts.
He licks his lips as he gets ready to slip back into a deep, wonderful slumber.

Is he back in the kennel where he was introduced to this world?
Eyes closed there too, snuggled in the warm pile of littermates and mother?

Or, does he visit his youth?
Racing in the yard.
Barking.
Jumping,
Tearing up the grass with his quick
Turns,
Stops,
And starts.

Oh, wherever this old brown dog goes, he goes there more often now than even just a year ago.
He does his best to keep up with the younger, little black dog,
But their playtime together wears him out.

And, before long, he's back on the chair,
Or the couch,
Or the bed...
