Unfair

I wish I were a confrontational person
That the anger brewing in my veins
Would spill out as the words I need to say
Instead of a blockade of tears

I wish being confrontational would help
That if I found the courage to stand up for you,
It would make a difference
And actually change things for the better

Because it’s not fair
And I know you don’t need me to tell you that
It’s a lesson the universe decided to teach you
Again

And again.

And again.

And again.
Like you didn’t get the memo the first
Dozen times you were kicked while you were down

All I can do is tell you that it’ll get better
But I know you don’t believe it,
Not really
Because we’ve been saying it for years and
Somehow things just keep getting worse.

I don’t want to believe
That my optimism is unrealistic
But maybe I’m just deluding myself
To keep at least one of us away from the edge
