A fleeting, light-winged "I love you"
flitted through his mind,
but he couldn't voice the words
to her as she slept soundly
beside him.
"I want you" and "I need you"
stirred, then drifted away like
wispy clouds and joined youthful
laughter and joy of the long past.
Sweet declarations of love had
long been forbidden by the lovely
eyes that seldom met his.
He stilled the tugging words, tucked
them away in their designated corner
of his mind, and slept the sleep
of the resigned.
Time and cause of physical death may
often be easily pinpointed. NOT SO
with love's death!
