Winter

by gelise

A winter day would chase away the life I once held dear
And in my pain the snow remained, a monochrome souvenir
My flower it was disavowed lost to the ice's shroud
The ice, it would thrive, and wither all life, trees, grass and ground
even the ice will thaw and leave only the raw sharp grief
All things from birds to weeds know the power Earth keeps sheathed
is unleashed in the winter. A blade wielded recklessly
Yet mankind does not hide despite the earth's supremacy
Cold is a testament to what Mother holds in her hands
Over humanity like a sword over Damocles
We are tyrants, now and always, that think they have control.
Over all: Mortality, Earth's life, land, light and her soul.
Yet the ice took back what we had built on the corpse of trees
On that day, ice reclaimed stolen roads ending a journey
The breaks had failed, the metal warped, and asphalt stained red
And in my pain the snow stood still as a connecting thread
It's quite a wonder how unjustified it seems to me
since we've done the same thing to her without any pity
