Words Unspoken

There's a heaviness in the room tonight
An invisible blanket of fog
         wrapped around every edge
         filling every crevice
         any source of light, obliterated

The pitch black is as deafening as it is silent
         ringing from a clock
or a rush of blood to the ears

Waves of nausea crashing against the surface
          pressure builds
         pounding, begging for an escape

Shallow breaths - gasps, looking for a release
The air thick with tension

until it's cut with a knife
