Bring wine release me
From care
Only with wine they drive
Sorrow away

There are no other lamps
In society
Than wine & the face
Of the handsome cupbearer

Be not proud of the Enchantment
Of thy eyelashes
Since pride profits not
Oft have I proved.

Master thou oft well advisest me
Not to love
But this lesson is
No law for me

Love befouls only the heart
Of great men
Since thou hast no love
Thou art excused

To a wink sacrificed I
My virtue
Ah therein is all my store

Thousand dangers of ruin has the street of love
Believe not that death frees thee from all

His learning truly lifted Hafiz to Heaven
But his love of thee has brot him to the dust

The way of love is unlimited
The soul is there sacrificed
There is no other way.

Scare me not with reason
Bring wine. Since Reason as watchman
Has nothing here to do

When thou givest thy heart to love
Tis good time tis a good thing
Use no counsel first

Who smote me? Ask thine eye,
O sweet child, let this not lie
As guilt against my Destiny

As the new moon needs a sharp eye
So thou an intelligent one; not every one

O friend blame not Hafiz,
While his glances so follow you,
I have in him all the time
Only your friend seen.

Stand up, that we may sacrifice the soul
Before the pencil of the Master
Who the picture of this world
So masterly has painted
Hafiz

This effervescing gentleman who despises a secret
Scorns me since I am riotous & enamoured,
Look at the virtues of lovers not at their faults
Since who is not virtuous himself, sees faults.

People of heart have the key to the treasure of the heart
Let none henceforth doubt of this refined truth
Shepherd in the vale of Rest thy wish will then be first fulfilled.
When thou several years hast served the Jethro of the heart
Blood trickles from the eye of Hafiz as if he were enchanted

Secretly to love & to drink, what is it? tis a dissolute day's work.
I side with the open drunkards, be it as it may.
Loose the knots of the heart & cumber thee no farther for the lot
No geometer has yet disentangled this confusion.
At the trade & changes of Time wonder not;
The like enchantments keeps Destiny ready.
Hold the glass discreetly, it was put together
Of the skulls of Jamschid, Keikobad, & Behmen,
Who teaches us where Kai was & Nimrod are gone
How the throne of Jamschid fell in pieces at last

When in eternity the light
Of thy beauty glistened, Love was ,
Which set the worlds on fire

Beams trickled from thy cheeks,
Angels saw them & remained cold
Indignant turned they then to men

See, the Understanding prayed
for a spark his light to kindle.
Jealousy was the dazzling spark

We wish like the glass
All clean to be; who wishes it not
The East wind breathes out in scents
Spices & perfumes
Why changes not the inner mind
Violet earth into musk?
