To My Daughter

You’re going to die.
Admit: there isn’t time
to walk every garden
before the gates close.

You’re going to have
decisions to make. Be
in those moments you
need to build yourself.

You’re going to want
and want more and want
to run away or maybe run
as your grandmother did.

You’re going to think
there is more you should
be doing. There isn’t time
to look too far back.

You’re going to ask
for more time. There isn’t

Through a break in the trees -

Through a break in the trees -
  Flows a tawny river -
Sanding the rock endlessly
  As a peerless carver.

The jungle is not seen
  In the murky water's face;
The sky does not skim upon
  Its delicate countenance.

It refuses the trees' approach;
  The rushing seeks to replace
Tribulations for peace -
  Skipping them away.

Its waters fill my mind;
  I remember Zongo Falls
As an obscure haven
  For which my heart longs.

Two streams that converge

Two streams that converge
  And flow inextricably
Are like two lovers
  Meandering about who meet -

Not knowing anything of what
  They were missing before
But now having full sight
  Each of the other -

Who rejoice at the freshet
And meld and flow as one
Assured of their fate
  And their continual love.

Like gold of Havilah

Like gold of Havilah
  God is true and straight.
I can exhort Adonai
  For His tender heart.

Be it ambivalence
  Or the hour of drear
Wherever prayer is
  The Lord abides there.

Royalty and rivalry
  May erupt with hate
But He will take my leave
  Untouched by the flame.

On wisps of hope alone -

On wisps of hope alone -
  Love cannot soar
For hope quickly goes -
  Returning at some hour.

It needs a pair of wings
  To up and away
When it seems resigned
  To an uncertain fate.

It needs a fresh wind
  Flowing strong yet soft -
Once and again -
  Bearing love aloft.

It needs a prayer or so
  For when trials arise -
A work of the Holy Ghost
  And faith might suffice.

I'm a beast of the field
  And you - a crane.
Spare me, love, a wing
So I can meet you halfway.
