A State of Fever
It has been days, and still this wind
keeps coming to me from the sea.
All night long, this raving wind
delivers lobsters and jellyfish
in the rope-baskets of sunken ships,
and shirts printed with a laughing tiger …
All night long, this raving wind
moans, a cat scratches at the door,
and from under my bed,
I hear approaching footsteps …
Why have these lobsters
donned canvas shoes?
Who told them I was here,
trembling with fever?
And this cat …
will he jump, kangaroolike,
through the window?
keeps coming to me from the sea.
All night long, this raving wind
delivers lobsters and jellyfish
in the rope-baskets of sunken ships,
and shirts printed with a laughing tiger …
All night long, this raving wind
moans, a cat scratches at the door,
and from under my bed,
I hear approaching footsteps …
Why have these lobsters
donned canvas shoes?
Who told them I was here,
trembling with fever?
And this cat …
will he jump, kangaroolike,
through the window?
