Stanzas, Occasioned by the Generosity of the English, to the Distressed Portugese

Where arts and arms astonish all the globe;
Where Science sweeps along with Roman mien;
Where more than empress in her royal robe,
The majesty of Liberty is seen;
Where countless graces croud the circling shore,
Is there yet room for one perfection more?

Yes, CHARITY! Religion's darling child;
See, the seraphic language of her look!
Without her, anchor'd Hope in vain had smil'd,
And heav'n-ey'd Faith had almost clos'd her book:
Without her, Virtue barren wou'd remain,
And ENGLISHMEN, be ENGLISHMEN in vain.
