Winter Landscape with a Church

At times, the Lord God
visits His house itself Himself
but seldom when people are there
with their hymns, sermons, and prayers.

During the enduring hymns
and interminable sermons,
the Lord God chooses to eat seeds
with the circumscribèd songbirds

and swap twig jokes
with the young branches
that roll and pitch
like unbridled ponies.

According to some accounts
He checks out the bacteria
and nondescript detritus under lesser rocks,
agape at their droll idioms.

There was one anonymous afternoon
when He heard the entire epic recital
of some droplets
that had participated in a double rainbow

that lasted the better part of an hour.
