Vulnerable
When unsymmetric chaos in its might
Ruled the dim, desolate Earth and left it bare,
In gloomy caves there wandered everywhere
Amorphous monsters, larvæ of affright.
Deep in the vast, impenetrable night
They lived and loved, dreading no future care,
Until their souls were fired by just despair,
When God, to dazzle them, created Light.
Groping like them through life's unhappy gloom,
I lived in callous stupor, sad and dumb,
Pleased with my changeless lot without surprise.
Oh! pardoning woman! in thy summer's bloom,
Why, to illume my dark soul didst thou come
And blind me with the splendor of thine eyes?
Ruled the dim, desolate Earth and left it bare,
In gloomy caves there wandered everywhere
Amorphous monsters, larvæ of affright.
Deep in the vast, impenetrable night
They lived and loved, dreading no future care,
Until their souls were fired by just despair,
When God, to dazzle them, created Light.
Groping like them through life's unhappy gloom,
I lived in callous stupor, sad and dumb,
Pleased with my changeless lot without surprise.
Oh! pardoning woman! in thy summer's bloom,
Why, to illume my dark soul didst thou come
And blind me with the splendor of thine eyes?
