Lines Addressed to his Father on Making Him a Present of a Knife
My dear Papa
Though superstitious Folks may say
That if a Knife you give away,
T'will cut the love of Friends most true,
Yet I feel sure I ne'er shall rue
The Day I gave this Knife to you;
For I am certain that no steel
Can hurt the love which I shall feel
For ever for my Parent dear,
Therefore my Father do not fear
This little Present to receive,
And me, your duteous Son believe,
