Swearing
In elder times an ancient custom 'twas,
To swear in weighty matters by the Mass.
But when Mass was put down, as old men note,
They swore then by the Cross of this grey groat.
And when the Cross was held likewise in scorn
Then Faith and Truth, for common oaths were sworn.
But now men banished have both Faith and Truth,
So that God damn me, is the common oath.
So custom keeps Decorum, by gradation,
Losing Mass, Cross, Faith, Truth — followeth damnation.
To swear in weighty matters by the Mass.
But when Mass was put down, as old men note,
They swore then by the Cross of this grey groat.
And when the Cross was held likewise in scorn
Then Faith and Truth, for common oaths were sworn.

So that God damn me, is the common oath.
