A Short and Sweet Sonnet Made by One of the Maids of Honour, upon the Death of Queen Elizabeth, Which She Sewed upon a Sampler, in Red Silke
Gone is Elizabeth ,
whom we have lov'd so dear
She our kinde Mistresse was
full foure and fortie yeares.
England she govern'd well,
not to be blamed:
Flanders she succour'd still,
and Ireland tamed.
France she befriended,
Spain she hath foiled.
Papists rejected,
and the Pope spoiled.
To Princes powerfull,
to the World vertuous
To her Foes merciful
to Subjects gracious,
Her Soul is in Heaven
The World keepes her Glory:
Subjects her good deeds,
and so ends my Story.
