Soliliguy in a Sleepless Night
Anxiety thou canker of the heart
That preys upon each tender vital part
How vain for me to think this night of rest
When thy corodings pain my sighing breast
And plant with piercing thorns my downy bed
While dire conjecture fills my soul with dread
Perhaps alass my petarch rackd with pain
May Court The Vagrant sleep and court in vain,
The poor domestic who in waiting stands
And nodding hears but half his mild commands
An envious object now appears to view
Ah me! before I never envy knew.
How gladly would I change with him my station
And all distinguishments of female fashion
To tend my petarch raise his aching head
To trim the midnight lamp and watch around his bed
But far far distant I am doom'd to mourn
And Count the tedious Hours till he return
So passes life we plan our schemes of bliss
And like a silly child the phantom kiss
We find we're only blest in expectation
Some accident destroys the fair foundation
Dash all our hopes and burst the painted bubble
And leave us plung'd in anxious care and trouble
That preys upon each tender vital part
How vain for me to think this night of rest
When thy corodings pain my sighing breast
And plant with piercing thorns my downy bed
While dire conjecture fills my soul with dread
Perhaps alass my petarch rackd with pain
May Court The Vagrant sleep and court in vain,
The poor domestic who in waiting stands
And nodding hears but half his mild commands
An envious object now appears to view
