Steel Man
When he awoke in the morning
He stretched until
his toes were in the sea.
His hands dug
the rough soil of mountains.
He sighed and night sucked in the gray scum of dawn.
He opened his eyes wider
and the sun spread the world
under his nose.
Casting the woolen clutch of sleep
From his cold belly,
He filled with the green liquid fire of new passions,
And coming from his bath
Knocked a simpering pallid moon
From where it slithered
in the sky
A soapy sponge.
Knocked the moon with an oath:
" Soft and heavy,
" Damn leperous sponge.
" Soft and slippery,
" Oozy, evil face —
" Mildew and tarnish stuff that will;
" Fuzz-fingered angel of despair —
" Here's oil to your lips
" From my knuckle joints.
" Here is steel. "
