The Shadow on the Grass

Upon a little homestead lawn
Secure from dog or gun,
A baby Kangaroo at morn
Lay blinking in the sun.

When suddenly with flashing sight
It glanced toward the sky,
And with the speed of dire affright
Sprung to the porch hard by.

And swiftly then a small brown shade
Came circling o'er the grass,
That well I knew a hawk had made
In its close stealthy pass.

Ah! Tiny wilding, wondered I,
Who told the sign to thee,
That when an enemy is nigh
Its shadow then wouldst see.
