Singing Tree
I once stood silent, aloof and free —
But now am become a Singing Tree.
For while I waited there apart
A little bird flew into my heart;
A little bird of brown and gold,
A timid bird, and yet so bold
It fluttered close to my gloomy breast
And builded there a silver nest;
And instantly there came a tune
Of a Golden Bird and a Silver Moon —
A song that only a tree can sing
When its leaves are touched with a golden wing.
O little bright Bird, abide with me,
In a silver nest in a Singing Tree!
But now am become a Singing Tree.
For while I waited there apart
A little bird flew into my heart;
A little bird of brown and gold,
A timid bird, and yet so bold
It fluttered close to my gloomy breast
And builded there a silver nest;
And instantly there came a tune
Of a Golden Bird and a Silver Moon —
A song that only a tree can sing
When its leaves are touched with a golden wing.
O little bright Bird, abide with me,
In a silver nest in a Singing Tree!
