The Smiling Month of May

Treading softly o'er the mountains,
Leaping, dancing on the lea,
Comes the Queen of Months, bestowing
Blessings bounteous and free;
School-boys frolic, lambkins play,
In the smiling month of May.

Like a damsel, decked with jewels,
Ready for her bridal hour;
Like an angel, clad in brightness,
Welcomed by each tree and flower,
Queen of beauty, blithe and gay,
Comes the smiling month of May.

Lark and linnet haste to meet her;
Hills and dales rejoice and sing;
Nature chants in adoration;
Valleys with sweet echoes ring;
Cuckoo's bell sounds night and day
In the smiling month of May.

Spring has spread her fresh green mantle;
Hedges bloom with flowerets wild;
Daisies smile and cowslips ponder,
As they watch Dame Nature's child:
Maypole dancers lead the way,
Welcoming the month of May.
