To the Right Honourable the Lady Dowager De La Warr
DEAR MADAM ,
Some Love the Park, and some the Play;
And others game their Time away:
While some, in Opposition worse.
Defraud their Mouths, to feed their Purse.
Noble Titles, plenteous Ease,
Our Vanity do often Please:
But Ah! how soon those Honours fall,
And cruel Death, still levels all.
In gloomy Shades, from Sight retir'd
Some take Delight to be admir'd.
Others, that love Parade, and Show
To ev'ry publick Meeting go,
And in the newest Mien, and Dress,
A studious Nicety profess.
Thus, let these modish Ladies blaze,
And by a Thousand artful Ways
A short lived Passion raise;
For Wit, and Beauty, let them courted be,
But grant me Quiet, and Obscurity.
And, would kind Heav'n such Favour show,
One little Cottage to bestow,
In some remote, but healthy Air,
Far from Town, and free from Care;
If then, the Muse my Genius raise,
And you approve her rural Lays;
Secure of Fame, I'de boldly rise,
And all the Censures of the World despise.
Some Love the Park, and some the Play;
And others game their Time away:
While some, in Opposition worse.
Defraud their Mouths, to feed their Purse.
