From an Aunt to her Niece

Forgive the freedom of an Aunt;
I was well pleas'd to see
You sit upon that very seat
Where God instructed me.

Oh! may you know those sacred truths,
Which did me satisfy!
Thus may you see your helpless state,
On Christ alone rely!

It's good to wait at Wisdom's Gates,
A blessing to receive;
Great peace have they that love God's Law,
And do in Christ believe.

He dy'd to set the guilty free,
And justify his Saints;
Thus we may come to God thro' Christ
With numberless complaints.

It's good to have a faithful Friend,
When we disclose our Mind;
But sure there is no Friend on Earth
Like to a Saviour kind.

And does he sympathize with us,
When him we tell our Grief?
He has an Arm of Sov'reign power,
And can give quick relief.

And now adieu, my dearest Niece,
We soon must parted be;
And when you read these Verses o'er
Oh! may you think of me!
