To

My heart is gone!
It went last night — when twilight gray
Was gathering up the light of day;
And ever since my pulses flow,
In solemn beatings calm and slow,
And thought goes wandering on and on
Where with my love my heart is gone!
Mine eyes are dark!
They dimmed last night when through the street
I watched far off his parting feet, —
And when their echoing tread was still,
A shadow gathered dark and chill,
And ever since no light I mark,
My heart is gone, — mine eyes are dark!
Mine ears are closed!
Though baby coos upon my knee,
And claps his hands in baby glee,
Though kindly voices murmur near,
And bring me words of love and cheer,
His parting voice my heart will hide
And heed nor hear aught else beside
Till days have flown,
And some bright morning comes, — and then
Mine ears will hear the voice again,
Mine eyes will shine through happy tears,
My soul will fling aside its fears,
And through the smiling autumn weather,
My heart and love come back together
When days have flown!
