The Power of Gold

The fair are soonest pierc'd with golden darts;
The king of diamonds is their king of hearts.
Where merit fails, there money does bewitch,
For 'tis sufficient merit to be rich.
Beauty was purchas'd by desert of old,
But now, Alas! 'tis bought with sordid gold.
