Last night, with the torrent of tears, The passage of sleep I waylaid;
On water, in mind of thy down, A charactery I pourtrayed.
The patchcoat I cast on the fire And having the prayer-niche in view,
A cup to the mem'ry I quaffed Of the cheek of that loveliest maid.
The face of the fair shone out, Methought, in my sight, unveiled,
And I, from afar, a kiss On the cheek of the moonlight laid.
Mine eye on the cupbearer's face And ear on the chant of the harp
Intent, this, with eye and with ear, An auspice of good I made.
In the workplace, to wit, of mine eye The sleepless, still picturing
The form of that face of thine, The limner, till dawn, I played.
The wine-cup, at sound of this song, The cupbearer proffered me;
I chanted this ode and my thirst With wine unmingled I stayed.
Each birdlet of fancy, away That flew from the bough of delight,
Still back to the harbour of mirth I beat with thy tresses-strap's aid.
For Hafiz full fair was the time; And thence, for friends' life and estate,
Good omen I augured of wish Accomplished and longing allayed.
