Hyman Lincoln Cohen
I can easily explain
Why I come to school every morning
At eight o'clock
To do my homework.
Who can study
In a crowded three-room apartment
On the fifth floor rear,
When your father, mother, uncle,
Baby, two sisters, and older brother
All want to talk at the same time?
Yet my father wants me
To become a lawyer
And always tells me
The life story of Lincoln,
After whom I was named,
How he rose from obscurity and poverty
To position and fame.
But I often wonder
If Lincoln would have become
President of the United States
Had he lived in three small rooms
On Delancey Street!
Why I come to school every morning
At eight o'clock
To do my homework.
Who can study
In a crowded three-room apartment
On the fifth floor rear,
When your father, mother, uncle,
Baby, two sisters, and older brother
All want to talk at the same time?
Yet my father wants me
To become a lawyer
And always tells me
The life story of Lincoln,
After whom I was named,
How he rose from obscurity and poverty
To position and fame.
But I often wonder
If Lincoln would have become
President of the United States
Had he lived in three small rooms
On Delancey Street!
