Envoy
Moments of vision come and go,
And some we kiss to birth;
Some vanish away like April snow
Touching the sun-warmed earth.
Where do the unkissed visions go?
Does anyone know?
I trust I shall meet you, winged joys,
That you are not lost for ever;
For the thought that my want of love destroys
Your life I can never, never
Endure to believe. O if it were,
I'm a murderer.
You cherubs that gathered round my head
Like a wreath of birds,
It's not to be thought that you are dead
Because I lacked words;
Nay, you are flown to a brighter mind,
To lips more kind.
And I bless you there, and I beg of you
Your forgiveness now.
He who gives you your birth is true,
And my friend, I vow;
But O, if any still wait to be,
Come back to me!
And some we kiss to birth;
Some vanish away like April snow
Touching the sun-warmed earth.
Where do the unkissed visions go?
Does anyone know?
I trust I shall meet you, winged joys,
That you are not lost for ever;
For the thought that my want of love destroys
Your life I can never, never
Endure to believe. O if it were,
I'm a murderer.
You cherubs that gathered round my head
Like a wreath of birds,
It's not to be thought that you are dead
Because I lacked words;
Nay, you are flown to a brighter mind,
To lips more kind.
And I bless you there, and I beg of you
Your forgiveness now.
He who gives you your birth is true,
And my friend, I vow;
But O, if any still wait to be,
Come back to me!
