The Miracle

The kernel escaped from the nut uncracked.
'Twas a wonderful thing; & they tell
That it might have been caught in the act,
Had the squirrel kept eye on its shell.
The squirrel was cocking his tail on a bough.
With an eye for a coming foot-fall
So believe it, nor rattle of how
That there never was kernel at all.
