To the Late Duke of Norfolk - Part 2
II.
A Sacrifice they did prepare,
The choicest of their Flocks;
The best and youngest were their Care,
That graz'd on Meads and Rocks:
Hymns of Praise! and Incense too,
But that's no Precedent for you.
Theirs were but fictious Deities,
Which Priests set up for Gain,
And with a pious Artifice,
Did soon the giddy Mob surprize
To worship but in vain.
Their Vows and Off'rings were unseen, unbeard,
'Twas only Superstition made them fear'd.
