Befriended
In sunshine and in rainfall,
For steadfast company,
There are the far-off, friendly hills
All unaware of me.
And when the Spring is over,
And when the grass forgets,
There are the little shadows left
As blue as violets.
The stars make shelter of the sky
With many a window-light.
The dreams that hide them all the day
Sing star-like all the night.
The winds come by from east and west
With pleasant passing words;
I warm my hands in sunset
And share my bread with birds.
For steadfast company,
There are the far-off, friendly hills
All unaware of me.
And when the Spring is over,
And when the grass forgets,
There are the little shadows left
As blue as violets.
The stars make shelter of the sky
With many a window-light.
The dreams that hide them all the day
Sing star-like all the night.
The winds come by from east and west
With pleasant passing words;
I warm my hands in sunset
And share my bread with birds.
