At Heaven's Gate

When in the light of the pearly gate
The servants of the Lord appear,
And for the duty left undone,
And prizes lost they might have won
They shed the burning tear —
When the glad song of the ransom'd throng
Comes floating o'er the crystal sea,
If thought should prompt again the tear.
That none of all now singing there
Was saved by you or me —
When the dear face of the Saviour kind
Is seen upon the golden throne,
And starts a tear when he shall say,
" Why come alone the heav'nly way
Alone! alone! alone " —
When mem'ry wings us regretful thoughts
Of loving friends we left behind,
And one and all with wand'ring feet,
Are seeking not the golden street,
Nor heaven's gate to find —

Jesus, Lord, in pity great,
Wipe the tear at heaven's gate!
At heaven's gate, at heaven's gate,
Wipe the tear at heaven's gate.
