To the Lady Chudleigh, On Printing Her Excellent Poems
MADAM ,
Could I the Wonders of your Pen rehearse,
In Notes, as sweet, and lofty as your Verse,
With eager Haste I would this Volume meet,
And pay my duteous Homage at your Feet.
Extol your great, your generous Design,
And praise the Beauties of each sparkling Line:
Show, with what solid Pleasures they delight,
How Wit, and Learning, in your Works unite:
With what illustrious Charms you Friendship dress,
And slighted Virtue's lovely Form express.
What pious Zeal, your sacred Lines inspire,
And how you raise our Souls with true Seraphick Fire.
But oh! too Conscious of the Want of Art,
I dare not write the Dictates of my Heart;
Lest my unskilful Muse should rudely praise
A Theam, deserving of the noblest Lays.
