To Miss Graham, of Gartmore, with the Chevalier Bayard

With laurels crown'd the blameless knight appears,
To dim the radiance of thine eye with tears.
Thy generous spirit will lament his fate,
And wish his glory had a longer date.
Thy sigh will add fresh honours to his grave:
The sigh of beauty dignifies the brave.
O! may he prove a mitigating guest
To gild the gloom, if gloom should cloud thy breast!
Sadness at times will solitude invade,
And listless languor seize the lonely maid.
Far from thy bosom drive the fiend Ennui ,
Eternal sun-shine should attend on thee;
May tracks of splendor thy fair name emblaze!
On thee may fortune shed distinguish'd rays!
