All evidences of a living church
Are here, although imposture is its fame.
The angel who made for a prophet search
And showed him Revelation to reclaim
Of his own hemisphere, that Christians smirch,
But foreign superstition never blame;
Miracles, portents, exodus and flame,
The Pentecost of tongues, martyrs, belief,
Virtuous women to believers wife,
Disciples watching with their doomed chief,
Apostles victrix over pagan strife,
A Promised Land, a strictly-ordered life.
Reason alone these evidences prods —
Reason, that is the judgment seat on Gods.
