Elegy Upon Two Elms

PARODY ON PART OF THE LYCIDAS IN MILTON .

W HERE , Sylphs and Fairies, pray were ye
When my two Elms came down, you see?
For neither were ye to be had
Where Poplars make old Budgen mad,
Nor yet where claret Franks inspires,
Nor where old Dick to ditch retires.
But, sure enough, I 'm sleeping now,
You could not there have sav'd a bough;
And might as well have supp'd in Dover ,
When these two Elms fell toppling over.
Nay, what could Love and Venus do,
Solicited in vain by Q .?
Whom Operatic Belles lament
When they to cherish him are sent;
When, at the rout by Thomas made,
With stick upon the courier laid,
The father of those tempting misses
Refus'd his Antiquary kisses!
