Oggi ritorna l'infelice giorno

Again returns the sad, ill-omened day,
On which my endless misery began;
The grass springs forth anew, the flowers are gay,
And all rejoices, — Heaven, and Earth, and man:
I, only, grieve — and my complaints renew
Of Nature, and the Stars, and my hard fate
And my own heart — whereon love fed and grew
Despite neglect, indifference, and hate.
Aye! Time returns the same — suns set and rise —
Night follows day — Day night — moons wax and wane —
The woods are green — cloudless and pure the skies —
But I am changed — anger, and grief and pain,
Have done their work, and to my own surprize
I know the day, but not myself again.
