Flame

I

Flame only knows our love —
Love that is flame,
A blinding light —
A savage joy —
Love that is flame low singing
Around the wasting brand of life.
Flame only knows our love —
Flame that in glowing embers
Beats as the rose heart trembles,
Given flaring to her sun,
Flame only tells our love —
Love that is flame,
A blinding joy —
A savage zest —
Love that in good grey ashes
Lies down at last with Death.

II

If you blew on them with your mouth
Ashes would glow again,
The breath of you would kindle fires,
Though they had pallid lain
Long cold and shriven;
Flame rising driven
Unto flame.
So my heart, burnt out and ashen,
Glows at the mention of your name.
