Expectation

In silent expectation — — waits,
With eager longing eye, and listening ear,
Hoping her — — 's well known voice to hear, —
And that fond hope her constant soul elates.

Hark! hark! the sound of footsteps come this way!
She starts, she looks around with anxious gaze;
Beholds a stranger , — turns with vex'd amaze,
While down her cheeks the pearly wand'rers stray.

And now, her gentle heart, with fears opprest,
Could almost chide her dear, yet loit'ring swain;
Love cannot chide , — she tunes a tender strain,
Till soft sighs heave her sympathetic breast.

When, lo, he comes , to dissipate her fears,
And see love , chastely blushing, smile thro' tears .
