In Disgrace
The fear-dulled eyes in the pallid face
Stared at the darkening window-pane;
Sullen, derided, in disgrace —
They watched night narrowing in again —
Far-away shoutings; a furtive wind
Which a keyhole had found; a star aloof;
A heart at war with a blunted mind;
And a spout dripping rain from the roof.
Drip — drip ... till the light is gone;
But a heart not so hard as a stone.
Stared at the darkening window-pane;
Sullen, derided, in disgrace —
They watched night narrowing in again —
Far-away shoutings; a furtive wind
Which a keyhole had found; a star aloof;
A heart at war with a blunted mind;
And a spout dripping rain from the roof.
Drip — drip ... till the light is gone;
But a heart not so hard as a stone.
