Thou who with thy long hair

Thou who with thy long hair
As with thy chains art come
Thine be opportunity
Since to capture slaves thou comest

O show thyself benign
And change thy mood
Since they to resign
Thou to ask & claim comest

Be it in peace be it in war
To yield to thee it is my doom
Since in every event thou art
With entrancing kisses come

Fire & water mingled are
In thy swelling ruby lip
Evil eyes be far!
As a juggler thou art come

Honor to thy soft heart
And a good work wouldst thou do
Pray for all the dead
Whom thine eyelashes slew

Say what boots my virtue
Since thou intent to steal the heart's treasures
All drunken & confused
To my still chamber art come

See Hafis said he to me
Thy coat with spots soiled
Wert thou safe from this company
Once home again?
Hafiz
