Ships in the Moonlight
If only we did not know each other,
I could be content, here, in my home.
But fate has brought us down its path,
And we have walked along the road.
The trees in sway toward the sunlight,
Asking for little more than warmth.
The city pulls your hand in,
Claiming more than just your sins.
I cannot say that you survive,
Or even me; I just don’t know.
Straying down a dark tunnel,
Waiting for the end to rise.
Trying hard is better though,
Knowledge comes from twisted pain.
An empty bottle lies,
Drained, broken, filled with hope.
Call upon your inner instinct,
Ask a simple question.
Will regret creep in,
As you look at this?
I will only say,
Today and today.
Now, not later,
This time is it.
For,
We were not ships passing in the moonlight,
We were ships that spoke to each other.
