As I dribble the big bumpy basketball down Montevideo’s court
the crowd cheers as I approach the half court line
The stench of sweat and bittersweet hard work filled my nostrils
I realize this smell, when everyone’s panting and trailing behind me
As someone catches up I see their determination to take the ball away
Their eyes are locked on the ball and their movements follow mine
I run, tasting the salty sweat falling from my cheek, as the orange ball bounces
The bright brown glossy gym floor, with red lines
shone underneath me like the referee's bald head, shiny and reflective
The yellow shirts of the players behind began to close in
There’s a girl in pigtails trying to swat the ball away
but the ball keeps bouncing almost as if it were to say
you bounce
can’t bounce
catch bounce
me bounce
I look around me and no one is open
They all have someone on them like leeches
I see an opening and continue to run
It’s the fourth quarter
with ten seconds left
I’m going as quick as a result from Google
Dodging everyone left and right trying to beat the clock
Then everything moves as if the world was lagging,
the crowd’s roar is muffled as
I approach the basketball net
My heart and stomach
in a big fluster
as my foot trips
the ball goes
out of bounds
Silence
