15. The Author's Reward

'T IS my fifth book of merry verse,
Yet no man has protested,
Or said he is one whit the worse,
So gently I have jested.

But many a reader finds his name
Is honoured in my pages,
And these rejoice to know their fame
Will last throughout the ages.

" Such tributes all are profitless,
For no one will requite them" —
They bring no money, I confess,
And yet I love to write them.
