Day and night the mine-stamps are thudding,
Thudding monotonously;
But the day is already quick
In the dark womb of time,
That, escaping, will find them
Frozen in the ice of silence.
Now while the mine-stamps are thudding,
Now is the time to act:
Golden ore can safeguard and establish
Our steadily eroding soil;
Diamond-chains can capture and prison
Our swiftly escaping water:
Now is the time for action.
Our children cry for bread,
And receive—a flag:
When our children's children cry for land,
Are they to receive—a skeleton?
Thudding monotonously;
But the day is already quick
In the dark womb of time,
That, escaping, will find them
Frozen in the ice of silence.
Now while the mine-stamps are thudding,
Now is the time to act:
Golden ore can safeguard and establish
Our steadily eroding soil;
Diamond-chains can capture and prison
Our swiftly escaping water:
Now is the time for action.
Our children cry for bread,
And receive—a flag:
When our children's children cry for land,
Are they to receive—a skeleton?
