The Agreable Surprise

On a sultry summer's day
Hyacintha sleeping lay,
Hid within a verdant shade,
For serenest slumbers made.

Coridon, her darling swain,
As he walk'd along the plain,
Saw the dear, the beauteous maid
In a tempting posture laid.

To her side he softly crept,
And prest and kiss'd her as she slept,
Then gently whisper'd in her ear,
But she did not, or would not hear.

At length he boldly jogged his fair,
Who, waking, blush'd to find him there;
She strove to rise, and had been gone,
But that the shepherd kept her down.
