Almira to Celadon, Founded on a Story in a Magazine
Tis finishd now the painful Conflicts o'er
And heaven to me will peace of mind restore
That power supreme whose blessed eyelids send
Bright beams of Joy the wretched to befriend
Has heard my sighs and markd my midnight tears
My earnest wrestlings and my humble prayers
For grace divine to teach me to subdue
Its rival in my heart the love of you —
And oh how hard the vital nerve t'untwine
That binds my heart in union sweet with thine
The ministers of grace alone can know
Who bore to heaven and ratified our vow
That faithful vow I grav'd upon my heart
But fate Commands and tells us we must part . —
yes we must part and here I give thee back
Thy vow — and for thy peace my heart shall make
Another vow which I will never break
Henceforth for ever shall my heart Conceal
Whate'er it feels nor shall my tongue reveal
One fond Idea that can give thee pain
Or breathe a claim thy freedom to restrain
Then hear me now and take the last farewell
Pour'd in thy bosom where the virtues dwell
Farewell thou dearest best of human kind
In every friend mayst thou almira find
Who on a single plank thrown safe on shore
Will trust the blandishments of life no more
Nor heed its cares its pleasures or its woes
For losing thee Ive nothing else to lose
But spend my time in prayer to heaven for thee
That length of days and Comfort thou may see
And by my truth and constancy to prove
My heart was not unworthy of thy love. —
And heaven to me will peace of mind restore
