Ambition

How little seen, and little understood,
Is high Ambition in our social state.
Envy and Fear have colour'd it for our hate;
A lurid planet with a line of blood:
The phantom of upbraiding widowhood
Follows it, pointing to her slaughtered mate:
Yet do its chariot-wheels the fields of fate
Plough deepest — promise best the fruits of good:
I would have our fresh English youth make choice
For model men of war's most noble names:
The highest in all walks let them revere!
But let the calm of eye & purpose, steer
For that ambitious Statesmanship, whose voice
The will of our great commonwealth proclaims.
